Course Rationale and Relevance:
Dental Nurse Apprenticeship Training and the Certificate in Dental Radiography do not include training and instruction in CBCT imaging; therefore, for Dental Nurses to undertake this extended role, education and training specific to CBCT imaging is required.

Learning Outcomes
- Understand the fundamental principles of CBCT imaging technology and its application in dental practice.
- Recognise the differences between conventional 2D radiography and 3D CBCT imaging, including their respective advantages and limitations.
- Develop the ability to prepare patients for CBCT scans, including explaining the procedure, addressing patient concerns and ensuring patient safety.
- Acquire skills in operating CBCT imaging equipment, including setting appropriate parameters for different types of scans and patient situations.
- Understand the principles of radiation protection and safety, including dose optimisation and the use of protective measures to minimise exposure to patients and staff.
- Learn to assess the quality of CBCT images and identify common artefacts and errors that may affect diagnostic outcomes.
- Gain introductory skills in interpreting CBCT images, recognising normal anatomical features and identifying common dental and maxillofacial pathologies.
- Understand the legal and ethical considerations related to CBCT imaging in dental practice, including informed consent, data protection and record-keeping requirements.
- Meet the requirement and level of standards required to take CBCT’s on the prescription of an appropriately qualified GDC/ GMC registered professionals.
Entry Requirements
Dental Professionals who fulfil the following criteria will be eligible for acceptance onto the course:
- Evidence of full GDC registration and indemnity insurance.
- Evidence of having approved Certificate in Dental Radiography.
- Evidence of having access to a CBCT to develop their portfolio.
- Have an appropriately trained Dental/Radiological professional to supervise their portfolio development.
Course Structure
The award will consist of 4 core components:
- Academic Component: (delivered through online webinars)
- CBCT Theory and identification of a normal scan
- Risk assessment
- Tutorial of taking a normal scan – this will be a video, it will explain patient preparation, equipment preparation (e.g., setting exposure factors) and technique
- Academic assessment of competence which will include:
- Risk Assessment Essay (Pass Mark: 50%)
- Structured Essay (Pass Mark: 50%)
- Multiple Choice Questions (Pass Mark: 70%)
- Clinical Component: to be delivered at the student’s workplace under the supervision of appropriately qualified mentors, who will provide formative as well as summative assessment of student progression.
- Clinical assessment of competence: based on submission of a clinical portfolio Record of Competence (ROC) (Pass Mark: 50%)
Students must achieve a pass in all assessments to gain the award.
Resit Arrangements
Students get two attempts to pass each assessment.

Further Information
Beyond the theoretical knowledge gained from this course, Dental Nurses are required to receive hands-on training on their scanning equipment within their work environment. Whenever feasible, this practical training should be conducted by a representative from the equipment’s manufacturing company.

Tracey is a co-owner of a private dental practice in Cumbria. She is a Diagnostic Radiographer by profession and has worked in radiography education for over twenty-five years, holding a range of posts. In addition to her dental practice responsibilities, Tracey is an Associate Lecturer for the University of Derby, teaching across the BSc (Hons) and MSc (pre-registration) Diagnostic Radiography programmes. Tracey is also a Guest Lecturer for Buckinghamshire New University, lectures for NHS England on a range of courses and CPD sessions as well as teaching on the Dental Radiography course for Dental Care Professionals at ICE.
