Implant dentistry is widely recognised as an increasingly important aspect of career choice for the dental clinician. This is partly driven by patient demand, and partly due to technological developments in the field of digital dentistry.
Digital dentistry is a revolutionary approach to managing patient workflows, as it involves the use of dental technologies it’s a far more efficient process in comparison with the currently used mechanical methods.
Cone beam CT (CBCT) scanners are just one part of the digital patient workflow system. The introduction of CBCT-based digital diagnostic and treatment planning technology has opened up a whole raft of exciting new opportunities. Research has shown an increase in the numbers of dentists using digital imaging systems, especially for GDPs involved in implant dentistry, restorative and aesthetic dentistry.
Consequently, the importance of high-quality postgraduate training and education for qualified dentists in dental implantology and digital dentistry is key to developing expert clinicians in the future.
Implant Centres of Excellence (ICE) Postgraduate Institute and Hospital
The ICE Postgraduate Institute and Hospital offers state-of-the-art teaching facilities, with seven surgeries, a dental laboratory and a fully-equipped operating theatre for day care surgery. As one of the UK’s premier providers of postgraduate implant and digital dentistry education, Implant Centres of Excellence (ICE) offers a unique educational experience from study days to University Masters Programmes. Additionally, the unequalled ICE Mentee Clinic provides trainees opportunities to treat patients in a structured supervised environment.
The MSc in Dental Implantology combines academic and clinical teaching to meet the GDC/FGDP Training Standards in Implant Dentistry (2016). As part of the MSc programme trainees treat a diverse range of patients and develop practical skills and competency in patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment, all under mentor supervision.
Advancing skills in digital dentistry
For those keen to get ahead in the world of digital implant dentistry, especially those more recently qualified and already familiar with digital techniques, ICE is introducing a PG Dip/MSc in Digital Dentistry in 2017, (subject to validation) – the first programme of its kind in the UK to enable clinicians to enhance their implant practice using the progressive technology of computer-aided digital dentistry. This programme will be delivered at ICE in association with Straumann.
With study options of 1, 2 or 3 years, there is an opportunity to study an accredited CBCT module on a standalone basis, with the opportunity to attain a PG Diploma or Masters Degree by completing additional modules in treatment planning, smile design, guided surgery and digital restoration. The academic teaching is delivered by leading experts in digital dentistry and CBCT, ensuring trainees will be proficient in the use of CBCT-based digital diagnostic and treatment planning technology and be able to interpret and report on dental CBCT scans.
Courses are delivered at the impressive ICE Hospital & Postgraduate Dental Institute in Salford Quays, Manchester. Students benefit from first-class facilities where all the necessary equipment for completion of the courses will be provided. This includes an extra-oral Morita scanner, intraoral digital scanners, surgical navigation systems, the latest software and 3D printers.
ICE are delighted to announce their role as Straumann’s National Reference Centre for Digital Dentistry. Prof. Cemal Ucer, one of the Director’s of ICE comments: “Our strong relationship with Straumann is a key milestone in UK digital dentistry. Together we strive to provide today’s clinicians with the very latest innovations and skills in implant dentistry and the digital workflow, to ultimately improve the level of care and treatment our patients receive.”
A formal MSc University qualification proves a life-long commitment to continual professional development.
