Our Dental Nurses, Jenny Jones and Megan Nolan recently returned from a 2-week volunteering programme in Tanzania with the charity Bridge2aid. Their trip aimed to provide emergency dentistry and pain relief for people who need it the most. Here is what Jenny and Megan had to say about the trip:
What was the experience like?
The whole experience was very rewarding. During our stay in Tanzania, Megan and I were Oral Health Educators and were responsible for decontamination, supporting the dentists and patients. We treated 613 patients in total who had been in pain for several years. It was inspiring to meet people that were so happy and friendly despite living in such difficult circumstances.
How was it working with Bridge2aid?
From the moment we arrived, the Bridge2aid team made us feel very welcome. Their staff were amazing and very supportive, they were our translators, tour guides and chaperones. Everything was extremely organised, transport to and from the clinics, as well as meals and accommodation. All our clinical equipment was also provided and unloaded for us.
What was your most memorable moment?
“There are too many to list! I really enjoyed learning African dancing and spending time with the locals.” – Jenny
“Receiving coconuts as a thank you gift from the locals” – Megan
Given the chance, would you do it again?
“100%” – Jenny
“Yes!!” – Megan
