Professor Cemal Ucer

After graduating from Manchester Dental School in 1982,

Cemal pursued postgraduate hospital training in oral

surgery, he has established a private referral practice in

oral surgery & implantology in 1988. During the past 25

years, he has carried out thousands of implant procedures

using different implant systems including DENTSPLY/Astra,

Brånemark, ITI/ Straumann and Sweden & Martina. He is dedicated to long term

dental research and education and was awarded one of the

first MSc degrees in implantology in the UK, at Manchester

University, after completing a two-year in vivo study into

guided bone regeneration in 1995.

His special clinical interests are into guided bone

regeneration, osteopromotion and biomechanical loading

of implants. His academic interests include developing

frameworks for assessment of clinical competencies in

implant dentistry as well as training and calibration of

mentors. He was awarded a PhD degree at Manchester

University for his study investigating the factors affecting the

survival of implants in iliac bone grafts and osteoporotic


He has lectured widely in implantology since 1990’s and

runs a private referral practice limited to oral surgery

and implantology at Oaklands Hospital in Manchester.

Cemal has been running the highly respected Multi-System

Implantology Certificate Course at Trafford General in

Manchester since early 90’s where has personally directed the postgraduate 

training of 100's of dentists.

He is a co-author of a peer reviewed paper reporting

the findings of a 5-year multi-national study of the success of

implants placed in fresh extraction sites. His other research

interests include the role of bone density on the primary

stability and success of implants; GBR and sinus grafting

techniques and prevention and management of Trigeminal

nerve injuries related to dental implants.

He is on the specialist list of Oral Surgery, a elected Fellow of the

International Team for Implantology (ITI), a past Board member

of the PEERS group

He has been appointed as an Honorary Professor and Clinical Lead of the Diploma/MSc programme in

Implantology at University of Salford (2008-2015) and at Edge Hill University (2014-). Cemal is a past

president (2011-2013) of the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) and a co-author and editor of

ARK- ADI’s distance learning programme. He is a cofounder of the ICE Foundation that incorporates Implant

Centres of Excellence (ICE) clinics, ICE institute and ICE Mentee School/ MSc programme in implant dentistry.

Cemal is an invited member of the Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) working group that was

convened to establish training and assessment standards in implant dentistry in the EU in 2008. He is a co-authored

the ADEE’s consensus papers in postgraduate education in implant dentistry in Europe (2008-2013). He was a member of the working group convenient by the FGDP (UK) and the GDC to update the Training Standards in Implant Dentistry (TSID) guidelines in 2012. Cemal is also a member of the Faculty of Examiners for the RCS Ed Diploma in Implant Dentistry
