Introduction

As a therapist, I help people to overcome issues like fears and phobias, stress and anxiety, weight loss, pain relief and stop smoking. I also offer alternative treatments such as deep tissue massage, reflexology and reiki. I have a diploma in all my therapies and I’ve also worked in St Ann’s Hospice in the Complementary Therapies department, helping cancer patients to relax by offering them reflexology and hand massages – I found this really rewarding.  Additionally, I also do hypno oncology which helps cancer patients to relax by relieving stress and painful symptoms as a result of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, such as nausea, hot flashes and headaches. This is also good for panic attacks as it gives them a positive mindset and helps them on their cancer journey.

How did you get into hypnotherapy?

I just felt I needed to help more people by doing something different. I started my career as a therapist because people always opened up to me about their problems. I guess I am a bit of a councilor – I’m a good listener and I have time for a lot of people. I was actually thinking about doing a counseling course, but I cam across hypnotherapy. After doing some research on how hypnotherapy works, I came across a taster session on hypnotherapy while I was in Warrington Hospital. I really enjoyed and I just knew it was my path to take. So, I decided to do the course and I’ve just never looked back.

What’s your background?

My background is actually working in various law firms, but I felt it wasn’t for me. I just felt I needed a complete change of career because I was feeling really unhappy. I wanted to do something that I would enjoy doing and that would suit me. One day, I came across a course on Complementary Therapies in Manchester, consisting of aromatherapy, massage and reflexology. I really enjoyed learning about the functioning of the body and I have progressed since then, knowing I have actually found something I have an interest in.

What is hypnotherapy and how does it work?

Hypnotherapy is a simple relaxation where the conscious mind relaxes and the subconscious mind becomes more receptive and absorbs all the positive suggestions that are brought forward in the session. Our conscious mind is where our logical thinking takes place like when we analyse things and decision making. Our unconscious mind regulates the functions of the body, the heart, the way we breathe, and the digestive system. Also, our past beliefs and all our negative thoughts are all stored in our unconscious mind and I tap into that. 

What does it feel like and do you give up control?

The patient is totally in control of their body – aware of everything that is happening around them. You are not asleep or unconscious. 
Basically, we all go into a trance every day for example when you drive from A to B and you’re thinking about something and you don’t even realise and you’ve suddenly arrived at your destination. Almost like you are daydreaming. Another example is like when you are reading and absorbing that information or watching TV, again you are under a trance.

What can hypnosis be used to treat?

It can treat fears and phobias, stress and anxiety and pain relief, to name a few.

Is there anything it can’t be used for?

Yes, if somebody is under the influence of drugs or alcohol that just won’t work. Also if a person suffers with bipolar, epilepsy or personality disorders, they would be transferred to another field of expertise with a psychologist.

Can you explain what would happen in a session with you?

Firstly, I’d have a chat with the patient to build up a rapport with them and I have to make sure they are feeling comfortable and at ease and are happy with me as a therapist. And then I go through a questionnaire with them to find out all their issues and problems. Then from that moment forward I book them in for a session where I’d go through an induction which is progressive relaxation. Or dependent on the individual’s problems, it could be a quicker induction. Then I do a ‘deepener’ which helps them to relax more into the hypnosis and then I’d put forward positive suggestions to help them to achieve their goal with hypnotherapy. At the end of the session, I would do a confidence and ego boosting/strengthening.

Would someone need to repeat sessions?

Yes. Hypnotherapy isn’t a quick fix. I don’t wave a magic wand. People have to come back for more than one session. For example, with weight loss they need one to three sessions.

Are the results immediate?

The results are gradual because you need repeat sessions.

What about people who have been to hypnotherapists before and it didn’t work?

Well, I’m a different therapist. I have a 100% success rate and all my patients have enjoyed their sessions. After one session, you feel so good and boosted you can’t wait to come back.
