Course overview

This is a four-day hands-on course with Dr Julian Caplan who has over 18 years experience developing CEREC Anterior techniques. The course aims to give delegates the confidence to treat anterior smile makeover cases using CEREC and incorporates:

  1. Live patient treatment
  2. Evidence-based treatment modalities
  3. Step by step workshop on CEREC Anterior concepts prior to patient treatment
  4. CEREC Omnicams available to delegates


• To teach delegates how to assess and treatment plan a smile design case.
• To understand the preparation requirements for Cerec restorations
• To understand the macro and micro anatomy necessary for aesthetic dentistry
• To understand the Cerec work flow for smile cases
• To be aware of the science behind contemporary bonding to enamel and dentine
• To be able to deliver a smile rehabilitation in a day


Dr Julian Caplan (BDS)

Dr. Julian Caplan qualified from Sheffield University in 1988. He is a Director on the board of the BACD, a senior instructor for the Larry Rosenthal Aesthetic Continuum course and lectures internationally on CAD/CAM dentistry, specifically CEREC®. His St. Albans based practice, Aviva Cosmetic Dentistry, is a private dental practice aimed at providing high-end cosmetic and functional dentistry. CEREC® dentistry is utilised to produce bot anterior and posterior restorations to meet the high aesthetic demands of his patients

  • Understand how to correctly perform veneer and crown preparations & preparations for porcelain restorations

  • Have a comprehensive list of all materials required for multiple anterior restorations
  • How to provide exceptional temporary restorations and how to make adjustments if required to provide outstanding biocopies
  • How to utilise smile design in v4.6 software
  • What parameter settings to use and how these affect the final restorations
  • How to organise occlusion in Cerec for smile design cases
  • How to accurately marginate
  • How to correctly scan using a standardised protocol for ultimate oral digitisation
  • Biocopy vs biogenetic/ morphological virtual wax-up
  • Understand tooth morphology to customise temps and final restorations
  • In-depth knowledge of final micro anatomy with simplified workflow
  • Recipe for staining and glazing to nature
  • Post glazing characterisation
  • Isolation techniques for bonding restorations
  • Bonding to dentine and enamel
  • Cementation technique
  • Finishing restorations

Entry Requirements

To register for this course at ICE you must:

  1. Be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC)
  2. Have clinical indemnity insurance to cover treatments on the course
  3. Have at least 1-2 years post qualification experience
  4. Be sufficiently fluent in written and spoken English to communicate effectively with patients, their relatives, the dental team and other healthcare professionals in the UK (GDC standards for the Dental Team, 2.1.2).
  5. Be using omnicams and have MCXl milling units, and running up-to-date Cerec software in your practice
